First Generation
1. John B. Cottrill was born about 1763 in Harrison County, Virginia. He died on 9 Jul 1850 in Barbour, West Virginia. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Here is the 1850 census page one with John and his wife living with the family of his son Elisha; and page two, the household of his son John and his wife Tabitha Buckalew.
John married Elisabeth Akert daughter of Frederick Akert and Mary Catherine Greathouse on 4 Feb 1790 in Harrison County, Virginia (later West Virginia). Elisabeth was born about 1775 in Harrison County, Virginia. She died before 2000.
They had the following children:

Watson married Sarah Greathouse daughter of Johannes Groethausen and Sarah 'Milly' Amelia Gillaspi on 10 Jul 1815 in Harrison, Virginia. Sarah was born about 1794 in Harrison County, West Virginia. She died in 1853.

3. Elias Cottrill Sr. (John B.) was born about 1795/1798 in Harrison County, Virginia. He died before 1870 in Missouri. He was double-counted in the 1850 census; he appears in Meigs County, Ohio and as an Argonaut/gold miner or "49-er" in Placerville, California with his son Watson and neighbor Leander Thompson. After returning to their Ohio farm, the family moved to Chariton County, Missouri. Here is the 1860 census. It shows the households of Elias and Heyley, his sons Watson and Elias Jr. and their (Griswold) wives, and his daughter Mary "Polly" and her husband John Brewer.
Elias married Heyley Greathouse, daughter of Johannes Groethausen and Sarah 'Milly' Amelia Gillaspi on 10 Jun 1815 in Harrison County, Virginia. Heyley was born about 1796 in Harrison County, Virginia. She died after 1860 in probably Missouri. Here is a copy of their Marriage Bond.

M vi. Watson Cottrill was born on 19 Mar 1830 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia. He died after 1911 in Texas. He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Temple, Bell County, Texas. He was a guerilla fighter in Missouri during the Civil War, a part of Captain Holtzclaw's gang. He was captured in Macon County and spent time in the Federal prison in Alton, Illinois. From there he joined the U. S. Army to settle tthe west and was once wounded by an arrow.
Watson married (1) Mary Jane Griswold daughter of Benjamin W. Griswold and Lucinda P. Blakey on 9 Sep 1858. Mary was born on 4 Mar 1836 in Kentucky. She died on 8 Jun 1900 in Texas. She was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Temple, Bell County, Texas.
Watson married (2) Mary V. Lee on 21 Mar 1901 in Bell County, Texas. Mary was born in 1847. She died in 1933.
+ M vii. Elias Cottrill Jr. was born on 26 Aug 1832. He died on 25 Jan 1919. He was a Confederate sympathizer in the Civil War, perhaps a Confederate soldier. He was imprisoned as a (guerilla) civilian in a Federal jail in Alton, Illinois during the latter part of the Civil War, along with his brother Watson. On condition of his release he had to sign a bond of allegiance. After the Civil War he and his family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he can be found in the 1880 census and the 1900 census. After 1910 he moved from St. Joseph to the Confederate (Soldiers) Home in Higginsville, Missouri with his wife Nellie. A picture of his grave is here. This photo is courtesy of James Ethan Yell.

Mary married John A. Brewer son of Alexander Brewer and Rachel Phillips on 26 Sep 1844 in Athens County, Ohio. John was born in 1819 in Ohio. He died on 15 Aug 1877 in Chariton County, Missouri.

He married Edna Byers and had two children named Ralph and Elizabeth.

John married (1) Louella Broughton daughter of Jesse Broughton and Giles Crews about 1878. Louella was born about 1860 in Boone County, Missouri. She died about 1890.
